Cecily Morris Completes NITA Deposition Skills Training in Miami

On March 9th and 10th, attorney Cecily Morris had the opportunity to attend the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) Deposition Skills Course in Miami—an intensive, hands-on program designed to sharpen one of the most critical tools in any litigator’s arsenal: the deposition.

From the moment the program began, it was clear this would not be a passive learning experience. The course was structured around doing, not just observing. Each participant conducted multiple depositions, received real-time feedback from experienced trial attorneys and judges, and had the chance to refine techniques in a supportive but challenging environment.

What stood out most was the emphasis on strategy. Depositions are often thought of as straightforward question-and-answer sessions, but the course highlighted how much planning, control, and adaptability they truly require. From framing questions to managing difficult witnesses, every exercise reinforced the importance of preparation and intentionality, while the faculty provided invaluable insight. Whether it was tightening the phrasing of a question or adjusting tone to maintain control of the room, the feedback helped transform small adjustments into meaningful improvements.

Another key takeaway was the focus on listening. It sounds simple, but in practice, truly listening to a witness’s answer – rather than rushing to the next question – can make all the difference. The course drove home how effective depositions are often built not on clever questions, but on careful attention to the answers. While the schedule was demanding, there were moments to connect with fellow attorneys from across the country, exchange perspectives, and build professional relationships that will extend beyond the course.

By the end of the program, Cecily walked away with more than just improved deposition skills. She gained renewed confidence in her approach, a deeper appreciation for the craft of questioning, and a toolkit of techniques that she can immediately apply in practice.
